Bluesky Surges To 16 Million Users With 1 Million Sign-Ups In A Day
Bluesky noted that over a million users joined in the week following the election, cementing its appeal as an alternative social space.
Bluesky, the decentralized social networking platform, has announced a massive spike in user growth, with over 1 million people joining in the past 24 hours. This milestone brings Bluesky's total user base to 16 million and marks one of the platform’s busiest days since its inception.
The surge coincides with rising discontent among users of other platforms, such as X (formerly Twitter) and Threads. X, under the ownership of Elon Musk, has faced criticism for promoting pro-Trump content following the recent U.S. presidential election, while Threads has grappled with moderation challenges. Bluesky noted that over a million users joined in the week following the election, cementing its appeal as an alternative social space.
This growth has propelled Bluesky to the top of the U.S. App Store's free apps chart, surpassing ChatGPT and Threads. Despite having fewer users than Threads, which boasts over 275 million, Bluesky’s CEO Jay Graber highlighted the platform’s strong engagement metrics. “We have a higher percentage of posters than most social sites... We haven’t dipped below ~30% posters,” Graber said in a recent post.
Bluesky’s technical resilience was tested Thursday as the platform briefly went down due to networking issues, including a problem with one of its internet service providers. The company quickly resolved the issue, ensuring uninterrupted service for its growing user base.
