Crypto Scammers Hack OpenAI’s Press Account On X, Promoting Fake Token
These scams typically use "crypto drainer" tools to steal NFTs and tokens from users' wallets once they connect them to the fraudulent sites.
OpenAI’s official press account on X (formerly Twitter) was hacked late Monday afternoon, with cybercriminals posting a fraudulent announcement promoting a fake cryptocurrency token called "$OPENAI." The post, which claimed that users could claim a portion of the nonexistent token, linked to a phishing site designed to steal login credentials from cryptocurrency wallets.
The fake post on OpenAI Newsroom, an account recently created to share official announcements, incorrectly described the fraudulent token as a step towards bridging AI and blockchain technology. Despite the blatant errors, such as a misspelled token name "OPEANAI," the post included a call to action encouraging users to connect their cryptocurrency wallets to claim tokens. The phishing site it linked to mimicked OpenAI’s official website but featured a suspicious URL, “token-openai.com.”
This is not the first time OpenAI-affiliated accounts have been targeted. In June 2023, OpenAI CTO Mira Murati's X account was hacked in a similar scam, also promoting a fake token. In the following months, accounts belonging to other OpenAI leaders, including chief scientist Jakub Pachocki and researcher Jason Wei, were similarly compromised and used to post identical phishing messages.
