Sony Group is preparing to introduce a new cryptocurrency exchange subsidiary in Japan by overhauling the local trading platform WhaleFin, which it acquired last year. As reported by The Block, the platform has undergone rebranding to S.BLOX Co. The new venture aims to work with Sony Group's various businesses to improve its cryptocurrency trading offerings.

The cryptocurrency trading platform initially began as DeCurret, a Japanese crypto exchange. It was acquired by the Japanese subsidiary of Singapore's Amber Group in 2022. Subsequently, in August 2023, it was taken over by Quetta Web Co., a fully-owned subsidiary of Sony.

The updated platform will boast a new user interface and a mobile app, enhancing user accessibility. However, the precise launch date for the S.BLOX crypto exchange remains unannounced.

Sony is actively expanding its footprint in the Web3 domain. Its business division, Sony Network Communications, collaborated with Startale Labs, a Japanese blockchain company, to develop Sony's public blockchain network. Sota Watanabe, the founder and CEO of Startale Labs, announced on X that an external director from Startale would head Sony's upcoming cryptocurrency exchange, though additional details remain undisclosed.
