Apple Integrates ChatGPT into Siri and First-Party Apps
Apple has assured users that privacy protections are integral to these new features. Requests processed by ChatGPT will not be stored by OpenAI, and users’ IP addresses will remain hidden.
At the WWDC 2024 in Cupertino, Apple made a groundbreaking announcement, the integration of ChatGPT, OpenAI's advanced AI chatbot, into Siri and various first-party apps within its operating systems. This partnership is designed to elevate the user experience by incorporating sophisticated AI capabilities directly into Apple devices.
Starting later this year, users will see ChatGPT-powered enhancements in Siri, iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia. This integration means that Siri can now utilize ChatGPT’s expertise to provide more detailed and nuanced responses. For instance, if a user needs menu suggestions based on specific ingredients, Siri can relay the request to ChatGPT and deliver a comprehensive answer after receiving user permission.
Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration: “We’re excited to partner with Apple to bring ChatGPT to their users in a new way. Apple shares our commitment to safety and innovation, and this partnership aligns with OpenAI’s mission to make advanced AI accessible to everyone.”
One of the standout features of this integration is the ability to include photos in queries. Users can ask questions related to images or documents, and Siri will leverage ChatGPT to provide relevant information. Additionally, system-wide tools such as Writing Tools will benefit from this AI integration, allowing users to generate content, including images, or refine ideas through ChatGPT’s capabilities.
Apple has assured users that privacy protections are integral to these new features. Requests processed by ChatGPT will not be stored by OpenAI, and users’ IP addresses will remain hidden. This commitment to privacy is designed to ensure user data is protected while benefiting from advanced AI technology.
Moreover, the ChatGPT integrations will be available for free, without the need for a separate ChatGPT or OpenAI account. However, users who subscribe to OpenAI’s ChatGPT premium plans will gain access to additional paid features within Siri and other Apple apps.
The integrations will initially be powered by GPT-4o, OpenAI’s latest generative AI model. This model promises more robust and sophisticated responses, enhancing the overall user experience across Apple’s ecosystem.
Apple’s integration of ChatGPT into Siri and its apps marks a significant leap in the use of AI in consumer technology. By combining Apple’s user-friendly design with OpenAI’s advanced AI capabilities, this partnership is set to offer users an enriched, intuitive, and secure digital experience.
