OpenAI plans to release its latest AI model, codenamed Orion, by December, aiming to coincide with the second anniversary of ChatGPT. Instead of an immediate public launch, OpenAI will initially grant access to key business partners to integrate Orion into their products and services. Sources indicate Microsoft is preparing to host the model on its Azure platform by November.

Orion, viewed as the successor to GPT-4, could be up to 100 times more powerful than its predecessor, marking a significant leap toward OpenAI’s vision of creating artificial general intelligence (AGI). While there’s no confirmation if Orion will officially be called GPT-5, OpenAI’s ongoing model developments show the firm’s ambitious trajectory in AI advancement. A recent post by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman alluded to the model's name by referencing the “winter constellations,” hinting at the Orion constellation that becomes prominent in winter.

The release of Orion aligns with OpenAI’s recent $6.6 billion funding round and a shift to a for-profit structure, enabling the company to further scale its capabilities. However, OpenAI has seen significant staffing changes, with the recent departures of key figures like CTO Mira Murati and Chief Research Officer Bob McGrew. Despite these shifts, OpenAI’s strategic model development with partners such as Microsoft aims to position Orion as a powerful new tool.
