OpenAI, a leading artificial intelligence research organization, has announced the formation of a safety and security committee tasked with overseeing critical safety and security decisions within the company. This move shows OpenAI’s commitment to ensuring the responsible development and deployment of advanced AI technologies.

The Safety and Security Committee will be chaired by Bret Taylor and include fellow directors Adam D’Angelo, Nicole Seligman, and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. This committee is tasked with making recommendations to the full Board on essential safety and security matters, with a particular focus on OpenAI's AI models and operations.

In a blog post released on Tuesday, OpenAI revealed that it has commenced training its next flagship AI model. This new model aims to push the boundaries of AI capabilities further, bringing the company closer to achieving Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). AGI represents a level of machine intelligence that can understand, learn, and apply knowledge across a wide range of tasks, similar to the cognitive abilities of humans.

One of the first tasks for the Safety and Security Committee will be to evaluate and refine OpenAI’s existing processes and safeguards. Over the next 90 days, the committee will conduct a thorough review and develop recommendations to enhance the safety and security framework. At the end of this period, the committee will present their findings and suggestions to the full Board. Following the Board’s review, OpenAI plans to publicly share an update on the adopted recommendations, ensuring transparency and accountability.

Additionally, OpenAI will seek the expertise of external safety, security, and technical professionals. Among them are former cybersecurity officials Rob Joyce and John Carlin, who will provide valuable insights and guidance to bolster the committee’s efforts.

This initiative is OpenAI's dedication to leading the AI industry not only in technological advancements but also in ethical considerations. By forming this committee, OpenAI aims to foster a culture of safety and security, ensuring that its AI systems are developed and deployed in ways that are maximally beneficial and minimally harmful.
