OpenAI Has Introduced A New 'Canvas' Interface Designed For Writing And Coding
The canvas provides a separate workspace where users can generate content, edit specific sections, and collaborate more naturally with the AI.
OpenAI has unveiled "canvas," a new ChatGPT feature aimed at enhancing the writing and coding experience. This feature, which debuted on Thursday, offers a dedicated workspace that complements the standard chat interface. It enables users to effortlessly create, modify, and perfect their text or code. Currently in beta, canvas is accessible to ChatGPT Plus and Teams subscribers, with plans to roll it out to Enterprise and Edu accounts in the following week.
This interface allows users to generate content within the canvas, then highlight sections to edit specific parts, rather than regenerating entire responses. The update places OpenAI in direct competition with similar tools from Anthropic and Cursor. Editable workspaces like canvas are becoming increasingly common as practical tools for AI-generated writing and coding.
For writing tasks, users can adjust text length, tone, or even translate content. For coding, the canvas offers functions like adding in-line comments, explaining code, and suggesting specific edits, which users can approve or modify.
