OpenAI Has Launched A New AI Model, GPT-4o Mini.
For developers using OpenAI’s API, GPT-4o mini is priced at 15 cents per million input tokens and 60 cents per million output tokens. The model has a context window of 128,000 tokens, approximately the length of a book, and a knowledge cutoff of October 2023.
OpenAI launched GPT-4o mini on Thursday, the newest addition to its lineup of small AI models. More cost-effective and quicker than its predecessors, GPT-4o mini is accessible to developers and consumers through the ChatGPT web and mobile applications, with availability for enterprise users scheduled for the following week.
The company claims that GPT-4o mini outperforms other leading small AI models in reasoning tasks involving text and vision. Small AI models like GPT-4o mini are becoming increasingly popular among developers due to their speed and cost efficiency compared to larger models such as GPT-4 Omni or Claude 3.5 Sonnet. These models are ideal for handling high-volume, simple tasks that developers often require AI to perform.
GPT-4o mini, derived from GPT-4o, represents OpenAI's quickest and most robust model to date, launched in May. The "o" in GPT-4o signifies "omni," indicative of its advanced functions in audio, video, and text, accommodating 50 languages with better speed and precision.
GPT-4o mini is set to replace GPT-3.5 Turbo as the smallest model offered by OpenAI. OpenAI reports that GPT-4o mini achieves an 82% score on the MMLU benchmark, assessing reasoning abilities, surpassing Gemini 1.5 Flash at 79% and Claude 3 Haiku at 75%, according to data from Artificial Analysis. In the MGSM math reasoning benchmark, GPT-4o mini attained an 87% score, outperforming Flash, which scored 78%, and Haiku, which scored 72%.
The mini AI model contributes to OpenAI's leadership in "multimodality," which facilitates the creation of diverse media types such as text, images, audio, and video within a unified tool, ChatGPT. This strategy is in harmony with the expansive vision set forth by OpenAI's Chief Operating Officer, Brad Lightcap, who has underscored the significance of multimodal abilities for complete AI interactions.
GPT-4o mini will be available to free users of ChatGPT, as well as ChatGPT Plus and Team subscribers starting Thursday. ChatGPT Enterprise users will gain access to the model next week, according to OpenAI's press release.
