Synchron, a neurotechnology company, has made advancements by integrating OpenAI’s generative AI technology into its brain-computer interface (BCI) program. This innovation aims to help patients with severe motor impairments, such as those with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), regain their ability to communicate. The BCI technology, enhanced by OpenAI, allows users to interact with digital devices hands-free through thought alone, generating automated prompts for texting and chatting based on contextual inputs, including the user's emotions.
Founded in 2012 and backed by notable tech figures like Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos, Synchron aims to differentiate itself from similar initiatives like Elon Musk’s Neuralink through its less invasive surgical procedure. Synchron's implant is inserted via the jugular vein and guided to the motor cortex, where it detects and transmits motor intent wirelessly. This approach contrasts with Neuralink’s method, which requires opening the skull to implant the device.
