YouTube has unveiled a set of new AI-powered tools for creators on its Shorts platform, leveraging Google's DeepMind video-generation model. Announced on Wednesday, the features, branded as Veo, allow creators to generate AI-driven video backgrounds and six-second video clips using written prompts. This development aims to help creators produce more engaging content with the assistance of artificial intelligence.

The Veo features build on earlier tools like Dream Screen, introduced in 2023, and offer more advanced capabilities. The AI-generated backgrounds will be available later in 2024, while the six-second clips are expected to be launched in 2025.

YouTube CEO Neal Mohan emphasized that these tools are designed to enhance creators' work by speeding up the production process and bringing creative ideas to life more efficiently. Additional AI-powered features will also be introduced in the YouTube Studio app, enabling creators to generate titles, thumbnails, and video ideas using AI by late 2024.

In response to concerns about AI-generated content overtaking platforms and violating intellectual property rights, YouTube assured creators that any content produced using AI would be watermarked and labeled as such.
